Optimizing internal operations frees Goodwill staff to focus on the mission

Cooking is in Yulie Reyes’ blood. When she was 15 and living in Tzitzuntzan, Mexico, she and her mother fulfilled their lifelong dream of owning a restaurant by transforming an old theater into a small but thriving dining establishment. At the Blue Moon Cafe, her family cooked traditional Mexican fare from recipes perfected by Reyes’ father. When Reyes moved to America with her family as an adult, she continued working in the food service industry – first at a fast-food restaurant, then later at a casual Mexican eatery where she quickly moved up from busser to bar manager. But the more she learned, the more Reyes realized she had a long way to go towards owning and running a successful restaurant. She found help through the Culinary Skills program offered through Goodwill’s training center in Tacoma, Washington.

To most, this snapshot looks like typical child’s play, but there’s more going on here than meets the eye. Debora – like hundreds of other schoolchildren across the world – is taking part in a program designed specifically for vulnerable communities.
